The Florence Nightingale Pledge
This is a photo of myself that I am extremely proud of. I appear happy and accomplished in this picture. The truth is, nursing school was one of the hardest things I have ever experienced. Luckily, you cannot see the tears, sleepless nights, gallons of coffee, and stress on my face in this photograph.
As stressful and demanding as nursing school was, there were many lessons learned and memories made. One of the most memorable moments in nursing school was during my pinning ceremony. My graduating class stood up and recited the Nightingale Pledge in front of our instructors, family and friends.
I hold this pledge very dear to my heart and hope that I uphold every word throughout my career as a nurse.
“I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping, and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and as a ‘missioner of health’ I will dedicate myself to devoted service to human welfare.“
